Two Japanese Poems

1. UJI

Cars flowing across Uji bridge at sunset
Fail to see the ghost of Yoshitsune
Grimacing in his exotic and bloodied armour. And here now appears Hideyoshi
With his long spoon dipping for tea-water
As in a moryoga painting laughter fading around him.The sighing wind ripples through tea branches
Fields once strewn like fruit with felled bodies
The mind hollows with the earthy scent of Zen.Like a sorrow-mad and tongue-uprooted stork
Mourning its dead lover, on the desolate shore
A girl runs back and forth aimlessly. The rapids swallow the restless sound of her steps
The spare and lonely trees gesture weirdly
White sand cools the fevered brow of Time.Above, the moon, like an enormous golden lantern
Byodo-in like a phoenix poised for flight
Its slender legs anchored in still water. As it pulls upward its perfect replica shadow
Prepares unceasingly for the plunge below,
Sleeplessly the Fujiwara nobles witness.Along the rim of stillness only their sentinel eyes
Behold the shimmering incandescent country
Spilling like dawn across the extended earth.

2. TAIKAN’S HOUSE

Tokyo machined without excess
Light and shiny as aircraft
Manicured to atomic precision.Patterned city of tamed matter
Standing still and speechless
With the erasure of personality.Ultramodernity
The aesthetic of machined minimalism
Machine no longer the braggart of yesterday
Shy machine which hides its name
Hides its process.Shy machine or sly machine
Submerges the senses the feelings
In pure visibility
Design that stops the mind
And conditions aesthesis. The city is design
Turning the still mind in unexpected constellations
Turning a corner a new pattern a new meaning
A new machine.Machine within machine
Clock within clock
Fractal within fractal
Taikan’s house a green ticking gear
A magic throb in the still heart of the beating.Bamboo and the wind of silence
Shino on the threshold human and ephemeral
Corridors shining with rain, fish, boatmen
The stillness harvests everything.Inside is outside
As outside is inside
Nature is painting
Painting is Nature
Nature is machine
Machine is painting
Catalog the fruit of amazing print technology
Green tea, plum and sticky rice on table
Boy-haired red-jumpered Tokyo adolescent
Framed against the window
The textured trunk snaking upward
The cicadas’ raucous violins.Mono-no-aware
The anime of temporality
The touch of tears in transient things
At the foot of Mount Fuji different actors
The same play – interminably. The slow hour aches to its close
Shino walks me through Ueno Park
Tall unruly sedges and lotus leaves like elephant ears
Nod and sway
Ducks glide aimlessly children play
The deafening cicadas from Taikan’s house
Claim the day.Blue sky above
Patterned clockwork the houses the cars the traffic lights
The street clean as a whistle
The call of the superfast train
The waiting aeroplane
The kaleidoscopic turning of the world
Taikan the avatar of painting
Masks, unmasks.

Two to R

1. Icarus

But if Truth is like the sun, we have all heard stories of how dangerous the attempt can be to fly too closely. – Rich Carlson

Perhaps always Ariel and Caliban
Share the human house. To one is flight
Unfettered, the other chafes
Against the bondage,
Weeps blood tears and spits
Malodorous refuse;
Struggling against biting ropes all night
Plots and labors to engineer or bribe;
Walking around in circles through the day
Imagines the leaden weight diminish, the wings
Soar on a windstream through amazing canyons.
To its companion is the nativity of the sun
The flesh all light, the tireless distances
Trasmutation of matter into spirit; and yet
Their companionship is more curse than blessing.
Icarus knew this anguish
Hubris of waxen wings and thirst for solar
Wind and void, fire, earth and water.
Icarus knew moments of miraculous flight
Inhuman and unearthly incandescence
The remembered glorious body; yet of clay
His tragic burden. The magic phoenix burns
And rises and burns again and rises
As if to demonstrate to the landlocked dragon
The miracle of flight. A golden dragon above
Waits patiently his hour. Icarus knew
He came before his time, a few would see
The unknown future starlight in his smile,
The legacy of his maiden voyage.

2. Heliun Dreams II
cosmic cowboy charlie on the sunset deck
of the edge of space viewing the burning horizon
did you have suddenly a l’avenir moment
shaking yourself awake and quickly forgetting,
the gorgeous cultic goddesses in impossible asanas
or casual conversations around esoteric science
did perhaps the black hole at the heart of the atom
open momentarily its seductive center
non-being braided with every appearance
pitch you over the precipice of rarefiled gases?
floating like space debris through escape scenarios
haunted ever since by phantasmal singularity
in the middle of the homecoming discover there was no home
the goddesses scattered like laughter or autumn leaves?
auroville they say works you over with vagueness
sun discs, fragments of past cultures, needles
wilderness, hungry Tamilians, loud gods, violence
behind all these sitting in the solar spacecraft
did you touch that chord no acid hit could equal
shaking yourself awake to the mediocrity and madness
networking with hitech gurus and trance djs
trying to piece together a future which slipped like water?
you dreamt of auroville west, with dolphins and collective nirvanas
a world never born which gnawed at the doors of flesh
turned gaesous in the brain, watery in the liver
scintillated like gold dust in the heart
it would not turn to words nor to matter
spinning like a neutrino wind in a subtle cyclotron
back home – was this what they call a home?
the loving go-getter spouse with piranha teeth
twenty-first century fox on the outside, apple-pie interior,
cats and their nine mundane lives circling the hours
the return of the goddess, the unending childhood nightmares
capture by the sedimented discouse in shiny helmet
the wagging finger, the chemical disbalance narrative,
the electro-shock therapy, strapped to the hospital bed
loneliness, helplessness, coldness in the bones, abjection
for a year no lassoing of cow clouds for cowboy charlie
as he hurtled horribly through black water, gasping for oxygen.
who was it slipped him the pipe as his head broke the surface,
strapped on the cylinder? was it she whom he sought
in Auroville, in the goddess-strewn patio, in his last homecoming
or was it some other?

LACMA 111909

We sit in a suspended cage
surrounded by bandaged and numbered forms
cured cadavers of the past:
only instead of the macabre
flashes of beauty escape in scintillations
exotic fragrances and momories instead of formaldehyde.
your soft and disinterested
distant eyes in a breathing body
question my subjectivity
with some compassion some sadness.

peeling the feeling i read that language
compassion is yours for me and more
akin to the fractured golden
silences waiting timelessly around us.
but sadness not for me not for you
sadness of surfaces that refuse restitution
hurtling headlong in a time of terrible ambiguity
sadness of the incomprehesible
of words that crumble and dissipate
engendering looming monsters where once was beauty
like a pungent tea the savor of irony rises.

a century ago some silent men had walked through rubble
carefully with tender hands
a landscape sorted and pieced together from ruins
developed a language of preservation and reconstruction
transformed much maligned monsters into gods
made proud victors bow their heads
left the intuition of a global consciousness
noosphere, supermind or world of archetypes
touching down on the summits of cosmopolitan mind.
the white disaster of colonial racial violence
almost they turned to a blessing, dreamt of making
the universal terrestrial and material
sowed the seed of a confederacy of nations
to embody the legacy of intersecting human histories
cosmogenesis, christogenesis, anthropogenesis
the restitution of the body of the sacrificed Person
arising out of the human in the image of Viswarupa.

but the hour of god departs
time curls like a dog’s tail back to the archaic
the language of ownership like a resistant virus grows
the encaged structure endlessly proliferates,
the psychology of subject making, packaged desire
the colonization of time, days and nights of Corporation
the cosmos vanishing into information technology
endlessly formatted and reformatted.
the gods now shackled or dressed like cadavers
serve a world Empire, histories carefully ordered
in a Museum that structures the telos of Capital,
the god making enterprise displaced to the eugenics factory
the comfortable numbness of neo-liberal globalization,
death-dealing hidden in the exhibitionary apparatus of Civilization’s anodyne.

but this is also the hour of the rise of the rest
modernity’s cracks yield the swarm populations
identities narrowing and hardening to enumerable gestures
the classficatory mechanism of western hegemony gone awry.
the kamikaze return, the costumed traditions burn
in protest or bare their fangs and burn whatever escapes
comprehension. the gods return but hardly
godlike, riding their chariots of hate and popular frenzy.
the past returns, economic barbarism in a three-piece suit
pitted against the barbarism of lying priesthood.
the rhetoric of cultic blood-rites and suspicion
at the swiftly multiplying altars of the first god, the last prophet or the one who died for our sake
or the avatars without number oozing from the walls
demanding adherents and ethnic cleansing
in exchange for the Promised Land for the Chosen People
Matter the contested interior and exterior.

you are indian you say, and american
you shuttle between two countries, two continents
two time zones, two histories, two languages.
To wear two semiotic coats and survive
one must study construction i say.
trailing clouds of history we come
identity blurred at the interstices
between subject and self like water i pass
a spiritual anthropology opens its gates
sedimented signatures, author, authority and authorization
peeled apart, the wholesome brotherhood of clans
the us/them laughter turns phantasmal,
muffled like a distant explosion.
between two alien descriptions i shuttle
using one’s instruments to sound the other
cultivating a ear for the unstruck sound.
we piece together the hybrid vocabulary
prepare the subjective topography of the posthuman
in rhizomatic encounters we expand
deconstruction is an act of love
the other swells like yeast from within
like east within west, west within east
we secretly prepare the subjective topography
of the confederacy of nations, the return of the gods
recreating themselves perpetually like jazz.
blessed are those who take a leap towards the future.

Nikhil Banerjee Plays Rageshree

He stretches the time quantum
Providing subjective space
Since space is time in the becoming,
The space of time
For consciousness to expand into
Bringing the human into proximity with the superman
Or perhaps questioning the boundaries of the human

The twang of the primordial sound
The one that every instrument, plucked, bowed, struck or blown
Remembers as its Origin
This is the slow hand godfather of slowhand
Merging of rudraveena and electric guitar
Cool fire.

Thus by shared experience of time
A reality and a life are born
The life of the larger beings
Those who share the expanded freedom
Even in this crowded here and now.

The well wrought urn of becoming
Attracts a high beauty of emotion –
Calm equality, deep eros and pathos –
Sringar and karuna stabilized by the gravity of shanta –
Form repeating patterns: the raga takes shape,
Specificity. Fiery lines come saturated with bhava
Without losing their peace or turning sentimental.
By the 20 minute mark, there is a beautiful prayer
Not a prayer of wanting but of human aspiring for the divine
The entire spectrum of emotions gathers confidence
Returning like the returns of the never-same
The eternal recurrence of difference
Increasing in strength and beauty,
Dancing to the background plucked-rhythm of the jod.

All seems alaap, but as the lightnings light the land
The patter of tabla like a heavy rain descends
As if called into existence by the intricate flashes
Like golden snakes or flashing anklets, clean and beautiful.
The miraculous divinity of the raga reveals itself –
The goddess in her body of sound –
The more apparent the less personal the expression
The more simply accurate the note sequences,
The rupa of the raga is experienced.

Remember, how the heard raga turned to image in the mind’s eye,
Then touch, smell, taste and finally your body itself was music
Each note vibrating in all your fluids, the watery element of subjective becoming?
Dead serious, wave upon wave of bliss expand from the center
And break upon the shores of the mind awaking memories
Personal and cosmic: Calm and intense,
Gold particles scintillate in the crucible of transformation
Rippling like primordial forces in the plane of immanence
Violent yet eternally still.

Prana, Kratu, Jazz II

Straight black jacket and black dervish cap
Knit eyebrows, the steady quizzical eyes
The veteran of the wind discipline winding
Lazy, straight or lightning swift at will.
Flanking behind the two younger sibling cats
Bend ornamental traceries, or subdue
The demon of sound, held down to willed obedience.
Beside him the magician of the finger drums
Patterns out the geometric landscape.
In Mughal times or earlier still in Sultanate
Amir Khusrau or Tansen sat in court
Surrounded by connoisseurs with bolsters, waterpipes, spittoons,
Negotiating the tasty dialog of Turkey, Persia, Hindustan.
Ecstatic sufis, clapping Dervishes, breath working yogis
Came together in the synaesthetic language
The wind moved yearning, melancholy and sweet
Or rattled like bursting thunder drums
When the gods respond with drenching rain.
In the beginning was the unimagined golden gong,
The unstruck sound, the seven selfborn cognitions
The magic box of numbers, space, time,
Wind of separation and joining, the photon’s spark
Water essence of taste, fragrant dust,
And causeless Delight which turned itself into longing.
From these for the delight of the Rasika
The gods took form, appeared, disappeared,
Captured by the adepts of the Hindu science of sound.
Springtime is when the interned daughter escapes.
Horns articulate the celestial kokila’s entreaties
In triplicate, the veteran cat and his sons
Relish the burgeoning creepers, the burning blossoms,
The south wind fragrant blows,
The drums madden like passionate stomping elephants
Their ringing skins overpowering temporal measures
And Krishna appears intoxicating the gopis.
The scene shifts and the cats are now cool hipsters,
Experts at the improvised moment.
Cats in the audience sitting in front constitute with them
The easy language of heaven-born perfection.
Drums and horns and the 99 inflections of wah-wahs,
Toba-tobas and kya baat hais weave the synergy
Of spontaneous collective co-creation. The grizzled leader
Conducts the nuanced journey sensitive to each,
Discovering integration with his minimal phrases.
Jazz is the hybrid celebration of the post-human.

Myna May 2010

a few days only
you filled my home with your flutter
your hop, chirp, trust and companionship
where the present tries to perch with its claws
clinging to thin air
a few days
a little fire mingling with mine
a little heart beating with my heart
a soft warmth so familiar yet so alien
prying memory’s casements
W. B. Yeats knew well
or maybe his poetic wisdom
when he imagined Leda against the rush of feathers
wondering at the strange heart infusing its rhythm
in trans-human becoming
there too a bird
enacted god’s unthinkable violence
but a vast one not your light scratch in time
the winged cosmic rhythms that wander ceaselessly
creating destroying.
and with positions reversed
the human a precarious guest there
visited by the passion of the undying breath
the mental in awe of the supramental
trusting yet unknowing
one encounter
enormous in global hisory
charred remains of continents, cities, belongings
another an indelible perfume at the edge of memory
too sweet, too bitter
Yeats wondered
At the relation between Knowledge and Power
Assimilation of wisdom at god’s burnout intensity
Rudra’s ruinous steps masking Vishnu’s intelligence
And Human incapacity
I too wonder
Are we incidental only
Bundles of sentience subject to recombinant accidents
Compulsive cartographers of subjective meaning
epic or lyric
Patriarchs of Illusion
Or mobile habitations of divinity
Birds of passage in a world of transitions
conscous wills expanding through appearance disappearence
Border-crossings
who comes to whom
or what seeks and what finds
in our little lives a vast mystery lurks
or the nameless mystery assumes a little name
hopping in wonder
who longs for whom
stretching across unbridgeable gulfs?
locked in dense wraps of bone, muscle, thought, feeling
and uncontrollably carried in circulations
all seek release
lives repeated
a dim memory grows of typal limits
to some the prison is not outside but inside
intuition of greater being draws close like evening
sister of transcendence
who were you bird
brief friendship of broken wing
seeking closeness to the incomprehensible, hop to the human
or swan of the supreme and spaceless ether wandering winged through the universe
in myna’s body
and who am i
to you or to me intersubjective
your gift of togetherness unhinging personal identity
discloses the rim of infinity’s braided becomings,
self-traversals.

Kumu

Kumu
Master of the half-withered branch
I went to see his paintings.
At the tattered edge
Of the street of Chinese houses,
Not thatched pavilions
Nor palaces
Their tiled roofs spread like heron wings –
Valley boulevard
Its middle fattened
With ultramodern conspicuous consumption
And postmodern irony.
Zeitgeist transiting
Strangely from blood-stoned castles
Through Spain, Mexico, California
Now settles
Between Shanghai and Los Angeles
Then thins to a trickle.
The last few houses
Like a bird’s little hops
Or flung-ink splotches
Lead to a clearing
At the center of a bamboo grove
A cave with inscriptions.
Here are shades of ash
Wet ink like moonlight
Random spots of color
Intense memories
Surrounded by evanescence
Between waking and dreaming.
The Daoist immortals
Here conduct their strange rituals
Oblivious of each other.
Spirit consonance
Is Xie He’s first principle
Between blur and object the shaman dances
Border crossing
In the animism of graded ink
Encounters structural method.
Pungent like tea
Gaunt like old bamboo
Eccentric like an ancient scholar
Simple like the crow
Existence stands indelible
A flash of laughter.
Three birds in one
Did it happen at all
Is it time passing or time being born?
Viewing fine scenery
In spring, summer, fall, winter
This gathering of poets
Spontaneous and unrepeatable
Reincarnates perpetually
The air is thick with déjà vu.
Like an easily missed wink
Like the flick of a fish-tail
It perches on the half-withered branch.
